Why Choosing Is So Hard (and How to Get Better at It)

Hello everyone,

Right now, life feels like a never-ending game of “What should we do next?”

My youngest is facing the sixth form dilemma: should he stay or should he go? My middle son has (at the time of writing) 13 days left to choose which university offer to accept. He’s had four months already - but why make a decision early when you can leave it to the very last minute and give everyone a small nervous breakdown in the process?

And me? I’m constantly deciding.

Despite teasing myself here, I actually tend to make most decisions pretty quickly. Often, the way forward feels quite clear - especially with bigger life decisions. I tend to sweat the small stuff, and run head first into the major life decisions. As long as my intuition is on board, I tend to trust it and go.

But what about you?

Are you the kind of person who decides quickly? Or do you like to "sleep on it"? And if you sleep on it… does that sometimes become “I just need a bit more time”, then “I’ll come back to it”, then… mañana, mañana* as my dad says?

Maybe you're decisive, but your quick calls sometimes backfire. You made the call without all the info, and now you’re stuck with the aftermath, secretly wishing you could reverse time.

We all find decision-making tough sometimes. You're not alone.

Many of my clients come to coaching when they know they have a decision to make - often about what’s next, and what the “right” thing is. They worry about past choices. They want certainty about the future. They want to live a life with purpose, and want their decisions to match that ambition.

Putting this episode together genuinely shifted how I think. I feel more confident in my own decision-making - and I hope it helps you feel the same.

Happy deciding,

Love,

Hannah

P.S. I’d love to hear from you: How do you make decisions? What’s a great decision you’ve made lately? And… what’s one that didn’t work out, and what did it teach you? Hit reply or DM me on Instagram @hellohannahmiller. I always love hearing your reflections. x

*mañana is a spanish word used to describe the indefinite future (indicates procrastination).
